Sir Edmund Hillary


1. Read the first page of “More than a Mountaineer” (Pt3 N3, 2003)


2. Who is the story about and what has he achieved?
The story is about Edmund Hillary. Edmund Hillary was famous for being the first person to climb the highest mountain in the world, Mt Everest.


3. Read the information about Edmund Hillary here.


4. Why did Edmund Hillary suddenly become so famous? Is this a good reason to be famous? How important is his achievement? Who else achieved it with him?
Sir Edmund Hillary was the first person to climb Mt Everest. He climbed it with Tenzing Norgay. This is a good reason to be famous because he can been noen a lot t

13. Write a list of things you would need to take if you were going on an expedition. (You might find some information in one of the links at the bottom of this doc.)
 
14. Pretend you are Edmund Hillary and you are at basecamp on Mt Everest. Write a letter home to your family to tell them how you are doing and what it is like. Tell them what you are excited about and what makes you nervous.


15. Write a Haiku about Mt Everest using some of the words you brainstormed with your partner earlier. You can do this with a partner if you like!
